Navigating the January Blahs: Reclaiming Your Momentum After the Holiday Haze

by Brent Roy, MCC

Ohh, the january Blahs! Like many, I often experience that familiar, subtle dip after the festive glow of Christmas begins to fade. As the dark, blustery, and often frigid days of January settle in, finding renewed momentum and enthusiasm for the year ahead can feel like an uphill battle. For most years, this post-holiday slump is just a brief blip – a day or two at most. After that, I naturally dive back into pursuing my goals and aspirations.

But I’ll be honest: this year felt different. As a seasoned Personal Development Coach, I often see clients grapple with similar periods of low motivation. From late December, when I bid farewell to my middle son as he headed back home to Vancouver, until just last week, I found myself grappling with what seemed like an unshakable case of the ‘January blahs.'”It was a period where motivation felt elusive. In fact, the simple act of “diving in” seemed an overwhelming task.

What Exactly Are the January Blahs?

The “January blahs” is a widely recognized phenomenon, a common feeling of low energy, a touch of sadness, or a significant lack of motivation that many people experience after the holiday season concludes. This isn’t just anecdotal; it’s often attributed to a combination of factors. The days are short and sunlight is scarce. Also, the excitement and social buzz of the holidays have dissipated, leaving a vacuum that can feel quite profound.

The novelty of the new year, with its resolutions and fresh starts, can also bring pressure, contributing to a sense of overwhelm rather than inspiration. Finding time to truly recharge without guilt is crucial during these periods. Essentially, it’s a temporary emotional and psychological lull that typically manifests during the first month of the year.

My Journey Back to Momentum: Simple Yet Powerful Strategies

Recognizing I was in a deeper slump than usual, I turned to two foundational practices that have always served me well, but which I had admittedly let slide. These aren’t revolutionary concepts. Nevertheless, their consistent application proved to be the bedrock of my recovery.

The Indisputable Power of Movement (Especially Outdoors)

One of my greatest assets is living remarkably close to a beautiful and impeccably maintained trail system. Miles of tree-lined, snowplowed pavement create the perfect backdrop for a walk in the crisp, fresh air. It’s accessible, serene, and incredibly effective. Just a 30-minute walk each day offers a multitude of health benefits that extend far beyond physical fitness. For me, it’s a powerful tool for mental clarity. It helps me to untangle thoughts and dissipate the fog of indecision and lethargy.

Years ago, my doctor shared a short but impactful YouTube video with me: “23 and 1/2 hours: What is the single best thing we can do for our health?” by Doc Evans. This video vividly illustrates the profound benefits of even minimal daily physical activity. If you harbor any doubts about the transformative power of a short walk, I wholeheartedly recommend watching it. It served as a powerful reminder for me then, and again now. Consistent, gentle movement is a cornerstone of overall well-being.

Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude

I’m not entirely sure why I shuffled this critically important exercise to the sidelines, but since consciously restarting the practice, I can unequivocally say: it truly works! The concept of gratitude is far from new; indeed, the Bible is riddled with verses instructing us to be thankful, to count our blessings in all circumstances. So much so that it inspired Johnson Oatman Jr. to pen the familiar and enduring 1897 hymn, “Count Your Blessings.” This timeless wisdom underscores a universal truth about human flourishing.

Beyond ancient wisdom, modern science extensively backs the benefits of gratitude. Studies consistently conclude that actively practicing gratitude transforms both mental and physical health by activating the brain’s reward system. It’s been shown to boost emotional well-being by reducing feelings of envy and depression, significantly improve sleep quality, strengthen social connections, and even enhance overall immunity. Regular practice isn’t just about feeling good in the moment; it actively trains the brain to adopt a more positive outlook. This encourages focusing on positive rather than negative experiences. Consequently, it builds resilience against future challenges.

To integrate gratitude into your daily routine, consider keeping a simple gratitude journal. Prompts like “Today I’m grateful for…” and “Today I’m looking forward to…” can set a positive tone for your day. Ending the day by jotting down “Things that happened today that I am thankful for” helps solidify those positive reflections.

Beyond My Experience: Your Path to Renewed Energy

Ultimately, these two seemingly simple practices – regular outdoor activity and a consistent focus on gratitude – were the crucial components that helped me navigate the January blahs and get back on track. They reminded me that sometimes, the most effective solutions are the ones we already know. We just need to recommit to them.
